Deceased Name: Goldie Gershgol MN United States Goldie Gershgol of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died on Jan. 25,
2007, just two months after celebrating her 100th birthday. She was born in
Poltova in The Ukraine and came to America when she was about seven years
old, growing up in St Paul. Prior to moving to Florida in the late-60s, she
had been a recognized leader in the Duluth Jewish community starting shortly
after her arrival in 1929, when she was brought to Duluth as the bride of
Joseph E. Gershgol. Soon after being put to work as a clerk in the family grocery
store, her father-in-law asked her to be, then told her that she was going to
be the leader of a new troop of Jewish Girl Scouts. Goldie took the girls
into her care and was a mentor to each for decades afterwards. One of the
scouts, Trudy Davis, spoke later of she, herself, having mentored a girl,
much in the same way that Goldie had taken care of her. She said that she
received a Mother's Day card from the girl one year that said, 'Thanks for
being a Mrs. Gershgol to me'. In the many Jewish and community organizations
that Mrs. Gershgol became involved, she almost always found herself in a
leadership position, locally, statewide and regionally. To mention some:
Hadassah, Federation and The Roundtable of Christians and Jews. While raising
four daughters she still seemed to have boundless energy and availability for
everyone and every cause. While her children were young she put away her
tennis racket, and when more time opened up for her, she took up golf,
winning numerous trophies and medals. Her interest and great talent as a cook
brought her to teaching young Jewish wives the tricks of cooking for Passover
every year. She also took on teaching bridge to the high school graduates
among her daughters' friends in preparation for their going off to college.
While still in Duluth, Mrs. Gershgol began work with glass beads, inventing
new flowers and shapes. She also experimented in combining beads with
needlework, creating a floral work that won a prize in the Minnesota State
Fair. Goldie Gershgol is survived by her daughters, Beverly Smit, Tami Fox,
Penny Frank and Jill Horowitz; nine grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren, all of whom deeply miss her. Duluth News-Tribune (MN) Date: February 18, 2007 Deceased Name: Gershgol , Goldie Gershgol, Goldie, 100, of Lauderhill, FL passed away
